Bangladesh are all set to take on India in a crucial two-match series, scheduled to begin from September 19 onwards at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Najmul Hossain Shanto and company are coming on the back of a historic series win against Pakistan away from home.
The biggest takeaway from Bangladesh's clean sweep against Pakistan was their bowling display. The new-look pace attack stepped into trouble the opposition batters while the reputed spin bowling attack did what they do best in the subcontinent.
If Bangladesh wish to stir the dominant Indian outfit in anyway, the bowling attack will have to make a massive statement. They do have form on their side, but the opposition's prowess coupled with their own hint of inexperience may pose to be an issue.
Although Bangladesh do not have fond memories in red-ball cricket against India, they have at times made a mark with the ball. On that note, let us take a look at Bangladesh's three best bowling performances in Tests against the Men in Blue.
#1 243 all out (Bangladesh vs India; 1st Test, 2010; Chittagong)
During the first of the two-match series, Bangladesh put in India to bat, but had to deal with an onslaught by Virender Sehwag. The opener scored 52 runs off 51 deliveries in a dominant 79-run opening partnership. The hosts, however, fought back, picking up wickets at regular intervals, not allowing partnerships to flourish.
Shahadat Hossain and Shakib Al Hasan ran through the Indian batting unit to reduce them to 150/6 at one point. An unbeaten hundred by Sachin Tendulkar helped India cross the 200-run mark. India were eventually bowled out for 243 at the start of Day 2, while both Hossain and Al Hasan ended up with five-wicket hauls.
Bangladesh were well in the game after giving India only a one-run lead at the end of the first innings. However, they could not replicate their bowling performance as the visitors piled on 413 in the second innings to go on to secure a 113-run win.
#2 145-7 (Bangladesh vs India; 2nd Test, 2022; Dhaka)
One of Bangladesh's most memorable bowling displays against India came in vain, and it marks their most recent outing as well. Bangladesh had handed the visitors a tricky fourth innings target, and were far from favorites.
But a spirited display by the spinners reduced India to 74-7 in no time. The Men in Blue had no answer to the duo of Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan, and were on the verge of losing the Test as well as squandering the series. The former even picked up a five-wicket haul, which included the key scalps of Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara.
Bangladesh could not make the most out of an ideal scenario as they were ousted by the duo of Shreyas Iyer and Ravichandran Ashwin. The duo put up an unbeaten partnership to score the remaining half of the target, and secure the series by 2-0.
#3 347-9 (India vs Bangladesh; 2nd Test; 2019; Eden Gardens, Kolkata)
Bangladesh played in the first-ever pink ball Test hosted by India in 2019. While it ended in a humiliating loss by an innings and 46 runs, the bowlers did have moments in patches over what they are capable of doing with the pink ball. To date it remains the sole day-night Test that Bangladesh have ever played.
After being skittled out for a paltry 106 courtesy of an exhibition by the Indian pacers, Bangladesh attempted to do the same. Although they could not pull off a dominant bowling display, the pace trio of Al-Amin Hossain, Abu Jayed, and Ebadot Hossain picked up a combined tally of eight wickets as India declared for 347-9. Barring Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane, no Indian batter crossed the 25-run mark.
Bangladesh were bowled out for 195 in the second Test to end the contest inside three days.
