Mumbai all-rounder Abhishek Nayar, on Sunday, fetched the highest price for an Indian in the IPL 6 auction. Nayar, who had a very fruitful Ranji season for Mumbai this year, contributing well with both the bat and the ball, had earlier said that he just wanted to get picked by a franchise.
“Never mind the money I get, I just want to be a part of the IPL”, Nayar was quoted as saying. However, his record in the recently concluded Ranji season in which he scored 992 runs at an average of 99.62 was good enough to prove his worth to the franchise owners.
Nayar was placed in the auction with a base price of $100,000. However, the franchisees continued to bid further for him andultimately it was Pune Warriors India who roped in the Mumbai all-rounder for a whopping $ 675,000 . The Mumbai dasher, who had a forgettable season for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 5, managing just 45 runs in the whole season, said earlier, “I am happy and also relieved. I know where I am playing now. Hopefully, I can prepare well and deliver.
“I am very happy where I am. Hopefully I can prove (justify) the amount of trust put in me by playing to my potential,” he said about his shift from King’s XI Punjab to the Warriors.
The left-handed batsman, who bowls medium pace with his right arm, has been a late addition to the India ‘A’ squad to take on the visiting Australian team in Chennai from Feb 16-18.
“I would be lying if I said if I wasn’t disappointed, but I was hopeful that there would be something better around the corner. Now that it has happened I feel it’s just about going there and proving the selectors right,” he said about his late inclusion as an additional member of the team.
Nayar further added on that he is now focussed on the Irani cup and the upcoming domestic tournaments to press the selectors for a spot in the senior national side.
