5 records and milestones from Day 2 of India's 1st 2024 Test vs New Zealand

The New Zealand bowling unit ran through the Indian line-up to decimate them to a total of 46 in the ongoing first bilateral Test fixture on Thursday (October 17) in Bengaluru. The score was India's lowest-ever total in a home Test and the third-lowest overall after 36 and 42 against Australia and England, respectively.

India's decision to bat first could not reap fruits as they were already three down for 10 runs. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) and Rishabh Pant (20) tried well, they couldn't pose resistance longer as the hosts were all-out under 32 overs.

Matt Henry emerged as the finest performer for the visitors with a five-wicket haul. Meanwhile, tall pacer William O'Rourke proved to be troublesome to handle as he finished with four scalps.

With this impressive performance, he became the joint-second fastest New Zealander to reach the milestone of 100 Test wickets in his 26th appearance.

He now holds the record with left-arm speedster Neil Wagner, who also reached 100 wickets in his 26th Test. Richard Hadlee is the fastest New Zealand bowler to claim 100 Test wickets in 25 matches.

#2 First instance of visiting pacers picking all 10 wickets against India since 2012

India's first innings was the first instance of a visiting pacer picking up all their wickets in a Test since 2012. Apart from the heroics of Henry and O'Rourke, Tim Southee picked a solitary wicket as well. Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel didn't throw down even a single over.

Interestingly, the previous instance was also achieved by New Zealand at the same venue. Southee (7), Doug Bracewell (2) and Trent Boult (1) were the wicket-takers, as India eventually won the game by five wickets.

#3 Virat Kohli becomes the second-most capped Indian cricketer across all formats

Although Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck, he achieved a crucial career milestone with his appearance in this Test. Making his international debut in 2008, he is now the second-most capped Indian player across all formats with 536 appearances.

Kohli surpassed MS Dhoni's record of 535 appearances and is only second behind Sachin Tendulkar (664).

#4 Only the second instance of top five out of the top eight batters being dismissed for a duck in a Test inning

India etched their name into an unwanted records list with their disappointing performance in the first Test fixture against New Zealand. Five Indian players among the top eight batters were dismissed for a duck in a Test innings for the first time since 1888.

At that time, the Australian team were all-out for 70, with five of the top eight batters failing to open their accounts. Surprisingly, the top four batters were out for a duck. England went on to win the game by an innings and 21 runs.

#5 Lowest-ever total by a side against New Zealand in Tests

The Rohit Sharma-led side recorded the lowest-ever total of 46 by a side against New Zealand in the longest format. Previously, the lowest total was 51 by Zimbabwe during a one-off Test at Napier in 2012.
