The defending champions England were ruthless in registering a thumping nine-wicket victory over Oman in Match 28 of T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday, June 14. The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua hosted this one-sided contest.
Adil Rashid (4/11) stole the show for the English team, while Jofra Archer (3/12) and Mark Wood (3/12) were also terrific to bowl out Oman for 47. In response, skipper Jos Buttler (24*) remained unbeaten as they sealed the chase in 3.1 overs.
Due to their mammoth victory, England improved their net run rate from -1.8 to +3.08, which puts them ahead of Scotland (+2.16). This will help them seal the Super Eight spot if the Scottish side loses against Australia.
Here's what Buttler said at the post-match presentation:
"I thought the tone was set really well by the bowlers. We managed to pick up those early wickets and restrict them and knock them off, so job done today and we've got another big game in two days' time."
On that note, let's take a look at the five records that were broken during the England-Oman game.
#1 Quickest run-chase in T20 World Cup history
This game witnessed England taking the fewest balls (19) to seal the chase in a T20 World Cup game. In 2014, Sri Lanka chased down the target of 40 in just 30 balls against the Netherlands.
In this edition, Namibia were all-out for a meager 72 against Australia on June 12. In response, Travis Head (34*) top-scored as the Aussies took only 34 balls to reach the target.
In T20 World Cup 2021, Australia were impressive with their bowling efforts to bundle out Bangladesh for 73. Then, Aaron Finch (40) was the top-scorer, as the Men in Yellow chased down the score in 38 balls.
#2 Oman registered their lowest T20I total
The AqibcIlyas-led Oman side lost four wickets in the powerplay overs and crumbed under pressure against the experienced English bowling unit. Ultimately, they were all-out for 47, which is now their lowest total in T20Is. Previously, their lowest total was 78, which came against Nepal in 2022.
Surprisingly, Shoaib Khan (11) emerged as the lowest individual top-scorer in the T20 World Cup history. He went past Colin Ackermann (11) in 2021.
#3 Phil Salt became the second batter to hit sixes off first two balls in T20Is
England opener Phil Salt was terrific to send the half-volleys to the deep extra-cover region to fetch a six in the first two balls. Although he was dismissed on the third ball, Salt became the second batter to slam maximums off the first two deliveries of a T20I innings.
In December 2022, Tanzania batter Ivan Selemani started the team's innings on a grand note by hitting sixes off the first two balls against Martin Akayezu.
#4 First trio to take three or more wickets in a T20 World Cup innings
Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid got their names registered into history books as the first trio to take three or more wickets in a T20 World Cup innings.
Previously, there have been 18 occasions of a trio taking three or more wickets in T20Is, but none of them have come in the showpiece event. In March this year, the Scottish bowlers, Bradley Curie, Mark Watt, Jack Jarvis took three wickets each to help them win by 32 runs against UAE.
#5 Second-lowest total against England in T20Is
Oman's 49 is the second-lowest total by any team against England in the shortest format.
In 2019, West Indies were all-out for a paltry 45 in a chase of 183, as Chris Jordan (4/6) was the pick of the bowlers for England.
Interestingly, West Indies also registered the third-lowest total against the Eoin Morgan-led side in T20 World Cup 2021. They were all out for just 55, with Adil Rashid (4/2) emerging as the finest performer.
