The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega-auction is nearing, giving rise to conversations with each passing day. During the 2024 season, some of Australia's top international players made headlines not just with their performances but also for their massive price tags.

However, with the auction now coming up ahead of the 2025 season, teams will be looking at their retentions and releases as they plan to shape their squads, looking at long-term assets for the next cycle.

Australian players have always been big talking points in the cash-rich league, and it is going to be no different this time around.

Will teams look to retain some of the big Australian names in their line-ups or will they be released? While only time will give us these answers, let's look at five Australian players whom franchises could release ahead of the mega-auction.

5 Australian internationals who might be released ahead of IPL 2025 auction

#5 Ashton Turner

Australian all-rounder Ashton Turner played for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2024. However, he managed to play just two games throughout the season.

Turner scored only 21 runs from two matches. While his numbers with the bat were definitely not impressive, he did not bowl a single over either. He made his IPL debut in 2019 but has not been a regular in the league, playing only six matches across two seasons.

With not much to show, it is highly likely that LSG will release Ashton Turner ahead of the mega-auction.

#4 Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh is another all-rounder who could be released ahead of the mega-auction. For the 2024 season, Delhi Capitals acquired his services for ₹6.5 crore.

Marsh played only four games in the season and scored 61 runs apart from taking one wicket. He was ruled out due to an injury and Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib replaced him.

With a poor performance in 2024 and being highly injury-prone, Marsh has not played a full IPL season in his career.

#3 Cameron Green

Cameron Green is yet another Australian all-rounder on this list. He is part of one of the biggest trades in IPL history. Green was traded from Mumbai Indians to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the 2024 season.

Whether he was able to justify the hefty price tag is arguable as he only scored 255 runs from 13 games and picked up only 10 wickets with the ball for RCB.

While he does have an impressive overall IPL record, scoring 707 runs and picking up 16 wickets from 29 matches, RCB could think of releasing him with the aim of possibly buying him back for a lesser price given his massive price tag.

#2 David Warner

Veteran Australian opener and seasoned campaigner David Warner is a big name in the IPL as well. Playing for the Delhi Capitals in 2024, Warner was not at his usual best, scoring only 168 runs from eight matches.

Warner recently announced his retirement from international cricket. The left-handed opener is now 37 and the Delhi Capitals will look for someone who can open the innings for them with a long-term perspective.

Given his decline in form in the last season and age being a factor, it will not be surprising if Delhi decides to let go of Warner.

#1 Mitchell Starc

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may seem to have struck a masterstroke with Mitchell Starc, splashing a massive ₹24.75 crore to bring him in ahead of IPL 2024. The move did pay them back as he delivered a vital performance in the final and set up their title win.

Starc picked up 17 wickets in 14 matches and was an integral part of their impressive pace-bowling line-up.

The Australian has often chosen national duty over the IPL and does not play all seasons. He has chosen to be away from the league citing fitness concerns as well.

The pacer is now 34 and with his history of being prone to injury, KKR will also want to look at someone who can serve them for a long period.
