2024 T20 World Cup: 3 records that can be broken in today’s India vs Bangladesh match

England v India - 1st Vitality IT20
Arshdeep Singh is chasing a double record vs Bangladesh.

India and Bangladesh. What a contest this is. If you take out all the Indian wins in the bilaterals and the fact that Bangladesh players keep their passionate antics aside for this one, it goes on par with the Bangladesh-Sri Lanka rivalry.

You can see this, quite simply, as Bangladesh's attempt to finally get that elusive win over India at the T20 World Cup and taper over the scars from 2016, from a game that's played on the highlights reels whenever there's a celebration of a World Cup, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, or even Bangladesh.

Expect a good game. And, while you are there, keep an eye on the following three big records two of the participating players are chasing in the game!

#3 Arshdeep Singh is one wicket away from beating Ashish Nehra's record

Thanks to his three brilliant wickets against Afghanistan, India's left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is now just one scalp away from beating Ashish Nehra's record for most wickets for an Indian in T20Is in the West Indies.

The two are currently tied at 10 wickets. Nehra took his quota in just five games during the 2010 T20 World Cup in the Caribbean. Arshdeep has taken seven matches to get here, which is still pretty good and better than his teammates. The bounce, the grip, and the windy conditions seem to be helping him a lot here so far.

In the 2010 World Cup, even though Nehra maintained his form, India failed to win any Super-Eights game. India would hope that with Arshdeep, the luck reverses and they can go through to the next round without much trouble.

#2 Tanzim Hasan Sakib is just three wickets away from a big record

Bangladesh's Tanzim Hasan Sakib has been in excellent form in the 2024 T20 World Cup, emerging as their highest wicket-taker with nine scalps in five games at an average of just nine. Now, if he picks up three more on Saturday, he'll be at 12 - the most wickets a Bangladeshi has picked up in one T20 World Cup.

The record is currently held by the evergreen all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan. The left-arm spinner had 11 wickets in six matches at an average of 11.18 in 2021-22 in the UAE. Breaking Shakib's record in his first T20 World Cup, that too as a fast bowler, would be a massive achievement for the 21-year-old Tanzim.

#1 Arshdeep Singh's second record chase

Thanks to his consistent performances and even a four-wicket haul against the USA in the group stage, Arshdeep has 10 wickets from just four matches and is close to another big record.

Similar to Sakib, he now needs just two wickets to beat former fast bowler RP Singh's record of 12 wickets (seven matches) and become the highest wicket-taker for India in a single edition of the T20 World Cup.

There were a lot of doubts over his form and abilities when he was selected for the squad. But so far, Arshdeep has proven to be a brilliant performer. Getting these two records to his name would give him the respect of being India's second-best T20I pacer after Jasprit Bumrah in the current set-up.
