Kyle McCord was the quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes, however, he was unable to live up to the lofty expectations of the Buckeyes and soon found himself out of Columbus. McCord is now with the Syracuse Orange and started his time with the ACC program well. But why did McCord leave Ohio State in the first place?

Why did Kyle McCord transfer to Syracuse?

McCord was the Buckeyes' starting quarterback during the 2023 season, taking over from CJ Stroud, who went to the NFL.

During that season, he threw for 3,170 yards, 26 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He went nearly undefeated in the regular season but lost the most important game of the Buckeyes' season, against the Michigan Wolverines.

After the regular season, McCord entered the transfer portal. He discussed his reasons for entering the portal when he appeared on "The QB Room" podcast in January.

"At the end of the day, the top level of college football and then especially onto the pros, it's a business," he told the podcast. "At the end of the day, Ohio State had to make a business decision they felt like was best for them. And I had to do the same thing."

McCord said that he made this decision on his own, and it was purely a way to help his career. However, Ohio State coach Ryan Day allegedly played a role in his move to Upstate New York.

Day was reportedly never convinced that Kyle McCord could lead Ohio State to a national championship and didn't commit to McCord being the starting quarterback for the 2024 season. McCord's decision to enter the transfer portal and leave the Buckeyes gave a solution to this issue.

How is Kyle McCord doing in 2024?

Now with the Syracuse Orange, Kyle McCord seems to be thriving. In his first game with his new team, McCord threw for 358 yards and four touchdowns against the Ohio Bobcats.

This was followed a week later by him throwing for 381 yards and another four touchdowns in the Orange's win over the ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

He seems far more comfortable with the program, who values him and appears to trust him more than what Ohio State did. However, it is still earlier days, and how things can pan out is still up in the air.
