One of the most interesting things about Mike Gundy is his brother, whose allegiance belongs to the Cowboys' in-state rival, Oklahoma. While he played at Oklahoma State, his brother, Cale Gundy, played for the Sooners and was an assistant in Norman from 1999 to 2022.

The Gundy brothers played as a quarterback for the in-state rivals at different times. Mike had his college career at Oklahoma State from 1986 to 1989, while Cale played at Oklahoma from 1990 to 1993. The brothers playing against one another would have been fun to watch.

Cale Gundy’s coaching career in a parallel universe from Mike Gundy

Cale Gundy started his college football coaching career as a graduate assistant in his alma mater following his playing career in 1994. He subsequently moved to UAB as a quarterback coach in 1995 and served as running back coach for the Blazers from 1996 to 1998.

After spending four seasons at UAB, Cale Gundy returned to Oklahoma in 1999 as a running back coach and went on to have a long career as an assistant with the Sooners. He served in different roles in Norman, including associate head coach and offensive coordinator.

Cale Gundy’s resignation from Oklahoma in 2022

Cale Gundy resigned after reading aloud a word during a film session in August 2022 that he admitted he should never have said, under any circumstance. The word was displayed on a player's iPad, and Gundy acknowledged the mistake, prompting his decision to step down.

"The unfortunate reality is that someone in my position can cause harm without ever meaning to do so," Gundy wrote in a statement on X. "In that circumstance, a man of character accepts accountability. I take responsibility for this mistake. I apologize."
"I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words. What I said was not malicious; it wasn't even intentional," Gundy wrote. "Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions."

At the time of his resignation, Gundy was the longest-serving coach in the Big 12, serving under Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley. The media touted the possibility of him taking a role under Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State but that never materialized.
