What happened in the Syracuse vs Ohio game in Week 1?

Syracuse recovered from a slow start to defeat Ohio 38-22 in Week 1 of the 2024 college football season. Kyle McCord was particularly impressive, throwing a career-high 354 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Wideout Trebor Pena had three touchdowns, which gave Fran Brown an impressive start to his tenure as Syracuse's head coach.

Speaking after the game, Brown said,

"I have been tight for the last three days. "I've just been a little nervous to not let the fans down. But then I saw the players, and I saw one of my coaches, and it was just like, 'Let’s go play ball.’”

That week, McCord completed 27 of his 39 passes, connecting with eight receivers. Following the game, the quarterback said,

"You expect to come out firing straight out of the gate. When it does not happen, it's frustrating, but once we got over that initial wave, we started to play better."

Kyle McCord joined Syracuse after three years at Ohio State

Kyle McCord started his collegiate career with Ohio State in 2021. He made five appearances as a true freshman for the Buckeyes while amassing 416 passing yards and two touchdowns for the season.

During his sophomore year, McCord appeared as C.J. Stroud's primary backup in seven games. That year, he had 190 passing yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. His 2022 Buckeyes reached the College Football Playoffs.

McCord had a breakout campaign in 2023, starting all 12 contests. Under its new QB1's guidance, OSU posted an 11-1 record and earned a Goodyear Cotton Bowl invite. McCord threw for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns against only six interceptions last fall. He earned a third-team All-Big Ten selection before entering the transfer portal.

The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native took his talents to Syracuse this offseason and is currently the team's go-to signal caller. After this season concludes, he aims to continue his career by earning an NFL Draft nod.
