NC State quarterback Grayson McCall was injured in the first quarter of the Wolfpack's game against Wake Forest on Saturday. This is a disappointing result for McCall, who was playing his first game since September 14th after a previous injury.

What happened to Grayson McCall?

Heading into the game on Saturday, Grayson McCall was a game-time decision. Ultimately, the coaching staff decided he was ready to go and started him against Wake Forest. However, he did not have much time to play as he was injured in the first quarter.

On the play, McCall scrambled with the ball when he couldn't see anyone to pass to. He took off running with the ball to try to gain yardage but was sandwiched between three Wake Forest defenders. He fumbled the ball, went down hard, and his helmet came off.

It was a scary scene for fans in the stadium and viewers on TV, and McCall needed to be carted off the field. He was seen moving his hands as the cart left the field, pointing toward the sky and giving a thumbs up to the crowd.

While his thumbs up gesture is a good sign that McCall did not suffer a life-threatening injury, it was later announced on the broadcast that McCall had been transported to the hospital.

When will Grayson McCall return?

It is too early to say when McCall will return. He will not return for the rest of the game against Wake Forest. CJ Bailey was brought into the game as his replacement and could be the starting quarterback going forward. The coaching staff will likely provide an update on McCall later in the week. The exact injury has not yet been announced.

How will Grayson McCall's absence affect NC State's offense?

Grayson McCall transferred to NC State this year as a sixth-year senior and there was a lot of hope he would help bring the Wolfpack to the next level. In the games he played, he performed well, completing 50 of 75 passing attempts and throwing for 476 yards and 2 touchdowns. Keep in mind, those stats include the game against Louisiana Tech where he did not finish the game.

With McCall out of the lineup, NC State will choose between two freshman quarterbacks, Lex Thomas and CJ Bailey. The rest of the team will need to step up with only two young quarterbacks available.
