Although Rutgers entered the game as a small betting favorite, it was UCLA that started the game hot. On the game's first drive, UCLA went down the field 75 yards on 11 plays to score a touchdown. However, on the next drive, Rutgers answered back with a touchdown of its own.
The two teams traded possessions where they both needed to punt before UCLA received the ball again in the second quarter and drove 91 yards down the field on 10 plays to score again. Rutgers got a few points back on its next drive with a field goal. However, the Bruins extended the lead when they scored their third touchdown of the first half with 22 seconds left on the clock.
