Two unbeaten teams, the San Jose State Spartans and Washington State Cougars, took on each other this Friday at Gesa Field at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Wash. Sophomore quarterback John Mateer took charge for the Cougars, while sophomore quarterback Emmett Brown was at center for the Spartans.
Washington State entered this game as a heavy -12.5-point favorite for this matchup. However, the game ends up being much closer than anticipated. It took two overtime periods and a failed two-point attempt from the Spartans to get a result.

John Mateer got the first score for the Washington State Cougars with a one-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a successful extra point by kicker Dean Jankowski. With just under a minute, the San Jose Spartans tied the game after Floyd Chalk IV's 66-yard rushing touchdown.
The Cougars started the second quarter with back-to-back touchdowns. Both times, Mateer threw the touchdown pass to Cooper Mathers to take his team up 21-10. Spartans signal caller Emmett Brown threw his first touchdown when he found Jacob Stewart in the endzone for a 4-yard touchdown pass.

The Cougars made a spirited comeback in the fourth quarter. John Meeter's two touchdown passes to Kyle William and Josh Meredith each were followed by a one-yard rushing touchdown from Dylan Paine.
With 0:26 left in the game, Emmett Brown threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to TreyShun Hurry to take a pivotal lead in the game (46-43). But the game was far from over. Dean Janikowski made a 52-yard field goal to tie the game 46-46 at the end of the fourth quarter.
Despite numerous attempts, both teams couldn't score in the first period of overtime. However, in the second overtime, both teams scored a touchdown, but it was the Cougars that completed a two-point conversion while the Spartans' two-point attempt was no good, resulting in a 54-52 thriller going Washington State's way.
