Lane Kiffin is mourning the loss of his father, Monte Kiffin, who died yesterday (July 12) aged 84. The Ole Miss Rebels Instagram account shared yesterday that Monte died peacefully in Oxford, surrounded by family and friends.

To honor his father's legacy, the Ole Miss head coach posted a nostalgic picture on X (formerly Twitter), remembering Monte's impactful time with the Florida Atlantic football program:

Monte Kiffin was a revered figure in the football world, having served as an assistant coach for Florida Atlantic from 2017 to 2019 under his son Lane. His tenure saw the Owls win two Conference USA titles.

"Monte was a coaching legend and one of the most respected individuals in football," said Brian White, Florida Atlantic Vice President. "He was a beloved member of the FAU and Boca Raton communities, and we were all fortunate for our time with him.”
“Not just a great football mind, Monte was a tremendous person who had a positive impact on so many. I extend my deepest sympathies to Lane and the Kiffin family in this difficult time," he added.

Monte's illustrious career spanned nearly three decades as an NFL assistant, including 13 years as the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won Super Bowl XXXVII.

Monte Kiffin, the mastermind behind the legendary "Tampa 2" defense, was honored by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following his passing. The Bucs' X account shared a touching tribute video featuring former Bucs athletes such as Tony Dungy and Warren Sapp. who recounted their fond memories of Monte.

Reacting to the heartfelt video, Monte's son Lane Kiffin posted:

"❤️❤️❤️❤️ . Thank you"

Monte Kiffin's "Tampa 2" defense was pivotal in the Buccaneers' Super Bowl XXXVII victory. The 2002 Buccaneers' defense is one of the NFL's greatest. This iconic defense featured future Hall of Famers such as Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch and Ronde Barber.

The NFL defensive mastermind was honored for his unparalleled contribution to the game by the Pro Football Hall of Fame earlier this year. Monte's coaching journey dates back to 1966 when Monte started out as a graduate assistant for Nebraska.
