"Most of the guys in the portal aren’t good enough to play for us": Clemson HC Dabo Swinney has hot take on transfer portal players

The NCAA transfer portal has been a way for teams to improve their rosters in college football, but it seems Clemson Tigers coach Dabo Swinney has issues with it. While on "College Sports on SiriusXM," Swinney discussed how he does not think the transfer portal will help his program.

"I mean, it's really simple," Swinney said. "Most of the guys in the portal aren't good enough to play for us. That's the reality of it. I mean, we have guys that are backups at Clemson that go in the portal because they just want to have an opportunity."

Swinney also said that there are different types of players who enter the portal, including players who are focused on money. However, Clemson is not going to be the winner in that battle, either, according to him. Swinney is just excited for only two players entering the spring transfer portal.

"So, we've been really fortunate, because first of all, we're established," Swinney said. "Been there 16 years. And we don't have a lot of attrition. I mean, we had 127 guys go through spring ball. and 125 are still on the roster after spring, post portal closing. That's a miracle in today's world." h/t On3

That is certainly one way to approach team building, and Dabo Swinney has been successful in constructing a national championship program his way.

What should we expect out of Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers in 2024?

The Clemson Tigers are an interesting program heading into the 2024 college football season. Last season, Clemson was sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference, but the Tigers (9-4, 4-4 ACC) look better. However, they do have a tougher nonconference schedule than most.

Their nonconference opponents are the Georgia Bulldogs, Appalachian State Mountaineers and The Citadel Bulldogs. However, with quarterback Cade Klubnik under center, the Tigers should be in a great position to bounce back and have double-digit wins.

With the ACC seeing the Florida State Seminoles without quarterback Jordan Travis as he was drafted by the New York Jets, expect Clemson to compete for the ACC championship in 2024.
