The Virginia Tech Hokies traveled to Florida to take on the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. Cameron Ward was the starting quarterback for the Hurricanes, while Kyron Drones led the offense for Virginia Tech.

The Hokies got an early stop after Cole Nelson forced a fumble off Miami Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward. This was followed by a touchdown drive led by Kyron Drones, who found Benji Gosnell in the endzone for a 25-yard score.
Ward redeemed himself in the next offensive drive, tying the score 7-7 after completing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jacolby George. The Hurricanes followed it up with an interception, which led to another successful offensive drive, taking Miami's lead to 14-7.
The start of the second quarter saw Virginia Tech tie the game 14-14 after Bhayshul Tuten ran 55 yards for a TD. They got a quick stop, getting the ball back for another touchdown drive, with Jaylin Lane running for 20 yards for a TD.

The Hurricanes got back to within three points with Cam Ward's six-yard touchdown pass to Cam McCormick. With 1:57 left on the game clock, the Hurricanes finally got the lead as Ward found Isaiah Horton in the endzone.
The controversial final play
With three seconds remaining and the Hokies trailing 38-34, Kyrone Drones threw a hail mary pass from the 30-yard line, which was caught by Da'Quan Felton in the endzone. The nearest official first indicated it was a touchdown and Virginia Tech erupted in joy.
Since the ruling on the field was a touchdown, clear evidence was needed to overturn the call. After six minutes of reviewing the play, the onfield call was controversially reversed, as Miami burst into cheers, winning the game 38-34.
