Lane Kiffin's father Monte Kiffin dies at 84, famed coaching legacy comes to an end

Lane Kiffin's father Monte Kiffin, who was a renowned college and NFL coach, died at the age of 84. According to a post shared by the Ole Miss Rebels on Instagram, his family and friends were present when he died in Oxford.

"Monte Kiffin, 84, peacefully passed away today in Oxford surrounded by family and friends. As his grandson Knox said, he's free of pain and smiling down on us from above. Please keep the Kiffin family in your thoughts and prayers in this time."

Before the start of his coaching career, Lane Kiffin's father Monte Kiffin also played professional football. During his collegiate career, he played both offensive and defensive tackle for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. from 1959 to 1963. He was then drafted with the No. 202 overall pick in the 1964 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

After just one season with the Vikings, Monte Kiffin spent a year in the Canadian Football League with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He then returned to spend the rest of his professional career in the Continental Football League(COFL), playing for the Toronto Rifles and the Brooklyn Dodgers. His professional football career, however, was short-lived as he then turned his focus to the world of coaching.


Lane Kiffin's father Monte Kiffin's coaching career

Monte Kiffin began his coaching career as a graduate assistant for his alma mater the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 1966. He was then promoted as the program's defensive coordinator in 1969. He was a part of the coaching staff when the Cornhuskers went on to become back-to-back undefeated national champs in 1970 and 1971.

He then spent three seasons with Arkansas as their DC and assistant head coach, before going on to take up his only head coaching role in college football with NC State in 1980. Kiffin spent three seasons with the Wolfpack as their head coach, putting up a 16-17 overall record during his stint.

Following this, he began his coaching journey in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers as their linebackers coach in 1983. His most memorable coaching gig in the NFL was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he was known as the orchestrator of the infamous "Tampa 2" defense. He helped the Bucs win Super Bowl XXXVII. In the end, Monte Kiffin coached at seven schools and eight NFL teams throughout his coaching career.

Monte Kiffin spent the past few years by his son Lane Kiffin's side as a player personnel analyst for the Rebels before his death.
