Nick Saban takes on new role post-retirement

Nick Saban has not slowed down following his retirement, taking on several roles since January. He signed on as an ESPN analyst for the popular College GameDay show which will include coverage of the NFL Draft and the SEC media days.

Showing his thoroughness, Saban did his homework for the analyst role by contacting his former assistant and football ally, Ole Miss Rebels coach Lane Kiffin.

In an interview with USA TODAY, Kiffin revealed the information about Saban calling him up and talking about his new role for 45 minutes. The former Crimson Tide coach also tried to understand the Ole Miss setup better.

“He was calling to break down the team,” Kiffin said. “He wanted to know stuff for the season because he’s attacking his new job.”

Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin have always been close and the latter has repeatedly praised the former for mentoring him during his most difficult moments.

Therefore, the college football world sat up and took notice when Kiffin made a claim that the clash between Alabama and Ole Miss last year would be seismic. He said it was because it would be the last time that he faced Saban.

Kiffin revealed that he had no insider information when he made that claim and that he only read the signs.

“Listening to him in press conferences, … his frustration of the direction of college football and NIL and how that affects locker rooms and everyone wanting to transfer twice a year and all of that, that really bothered him, I felt,” Kiffin said. “And so I just kind of felt like this might be it – and certainly might be it within two years, because they weren’t on the schedule the following year.”

Nick Saban was praised for his first appearance as an analyst on ESPN's 2024 NFL Draft coverage. But the information given by Lane Kiffin shows the work that goes into the polished performances of the ex-Alabama coach.
