The ACC could be the next conference to witness an implosion in the world of college athletics. The ongoing chaos within the conference has brought a significant level of uncertainty regarding its future and a host of analysts believe the league might not survive.

According to college football insider Greg Swaim, the ACC is on the brink of collapse as Florida State and Clemson continue to push to leave the conference. He has for months maintained that the league is unlikely to survive the chaos as it continues to get worse.

While the Seminoles and the Tigers lead the charge to exit the conference, Swaim claims many other schools within the league harbor the same intention. The implosion of the Pac-12 last summer has added a level of urgency to the situation within the conference.

“As we've been talking about for at least a year, the #ACC as a power conference is on its deathbed, as #FSU and #Clemson will eventually leave...but they're not even close to the only ones,” Swaim said on X.
“Don't think for a minute that what they witnessed a year ago with the meltdown of the #Pac12 doesn't expedite the situation somewhat, and there are some similarities.”

ACC schools discussing with Power Five conferences

Florida State and Clemson became more active in their plan to leave the ACC this offseason. The two schools filed a separate lawsuit against the conference in their home states. This move has brought a significant level of uncertainty to the conference over the past months.

However, not only the two schools are planning to leave the conference amid the ongoing chaos. According to Swaim, a host of schools within the league are already discussing the possibility of a potential realignment with Power Five conferences through third parties.

“As others have recently reported, there are quite a few ACC schools who realize the situation could change quickly, and so have been having third-party conversations with other power conferences for some time,” Swaim wrote on X.

With a lot of teams within the league evaluating their options for a potential exit, the situation within the league will most likely escalate over the next couple of months. The level of interest the Power Five leagues have in these schools remains unknown.

Greg Swaim is confident that both Florida State and Clemson will find their way out of the conference before 2026. This is bound to create an exit pathway for other schools, effectively leading to an implosion of the ACC.
