The ACC collapse has been one of the biggest stories in conference realignment, as there has been a lot of talk about the health of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Big 12 is one of the conferences that could get stronger and more powerful as a result of the Atlantic Coast Conference possibly becoming more like the Pac-12 currently is.

College football insider Greg Swaim posted that the Big 12 could expand and Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark could target both the Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles in conference realignment.

"The Big12 wants FSU and Clemson and is willing to use private equity to help them. However, to get that, they'll need to sign up long-term. There definitely will not be any extended revenue for any new teams, as that was a disaster with OU and Texas. Getting FSU and Clemson would likely have the remaining ACC teams looking for a landing spot, as the rest are basically G5 at that point," Yormark wrote in his tweet.

This would be an interesting situation if they were going to be using private equity to help the Big 12 expansion actually happen.

Is the ACC collapse imminent?

The ACC collapse could happen soon but it really depends on something that the world does not have any idea about. Both the Clemson Tigers and the Florida State Seminoles are in lawsuits against the Atlantic Coast Conference in regards to the Grant of Rights Agreement and their inability to join other conferences.

However, this all depends on their legal tussle, as if the courts were to rule in favor of the ACC, talks surrounding the ACC collapse would go away as the schools would have to wait until 2036, when the media rights contract with ESPN officially expires.

If the judge rules in favor of the two schools, that could cause a lot of movement as the poaching of the ACC teams would begin and look eerily similar to what happened to the Pac-12 Conference.

There is a possibility that the courts will deem the Grant of Rights Agreement illegal or invalid and allow teams to leave the Atlantic Coast Conference in order to seek a new start with a new conference.

The ACC collapse is going to happen if the Clemson Tigers and Florida State Seminoles leave and once they do, other schools will officially leave and follow suit.
