Travis Hunter's take on the Heisman Trophy race

Travis Hunter offered his take on the Heisman Trophy race on the “Outta Pocket with RGIII” podcast. He dropped a controversial Ashton Jeanty beef, which has generated a series of controversies in the landscape.

"Y'all see Ashton Jeanty, but it's not like we haven't seen a running back that's good,” Hunter said. We haven't seen a player that plays both ways. I'm going to keep saying that.
“He has 95 carries for 1,000 yards. If I had 95 catches, how many yards do you think I'd have? If I had 95 targets on defense, what do you think I'd have? …. HE got double the touches I got on the offensive side of the ball, and I still have defensive stats that are crazy.”

Jeanty has been unstoppable through the first six games of the 2024 college football season. The running back boasts the nation-best 1,248 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns so far, setting the tone for Boise State's offense.

On the other hand, Hunter has been brilliant as a two-way star, logging extraordinary numbers. On offense, he leads the nation with 49 catches, amassing 587 yards and six touchdowns. He’s also made his mark defensively with 18 tackles and two interceptions.

Johnny Manziel offers his take on Travis Hunter's Heisman chances

Johnny Manziel sees Ashton Jeanty ahead of Travis Hunter in the Heisman Trophy race. However, the former Texas A&M quarterback suggested what the two-way star needs to do to close the gap as the season progresses. Hunter didn't play the second half against Kansas State due to injury.

“The one thing [Hunter] needed to do was stay healthy," Manziel said. "Missing a game is obviously going to put [Hunter] back a little bit, but it also would probably be a good time to buy. He’s going to have to continue to play well to keep this Heisman run going.”

Jeanty is widely considered the player leading the race for college football's most coveted honor. The running back is bringing out numbers last seen with Barry Sanders, and he is on the route to break his single-season rushing record.
