"He got that dawg in him": College baseball fans rejoice as JJ Wetherholt becomes West Virginia's highest-picked player in history

JJ Wetherholt became the highest draft pick in West Virginia Mountaineers history. The St. Louis Cardinals made him the 7th overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Wetherholt came into this year's draft as the 4th ranked prospect, establishing himself as one of the purest hitters in NCAA Baseball during his time with the Mountaineers. This makes the Cardinals' choice to choose him unsurprising, although projections prior to the draft predicted him to be a top-five draft pick.

His call-up to the major leagues excited fans, who took to social media to express their joy. Some of them celebrated his call-up by acknowledging the history he made for West Virginia's baseball program.

"Highest drafted player in West Virginia baseball program history. Congrats! The Cardinals are getting a great person and baseball player," said one fan.

Breaking down JJ Wetherholt's phenomenal NCAA Baseball career with the West Virginia Mountaineers

Wetherholt recorded five home runs and 39 RBI with an average of .308, while stealing 15 bases in his freshman year. His performances at the plate earned him a spot in the Big 12 All-Freshman Team that year.

He had a breakthrough sophomore season recording 16 home runs and 60 RBIs while stealing 36 bases. He was named the Big 12 Player of the Year and finished the season as a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and the Golden Spikes Award.

Although an injury hampered his junior season, JJ Wetherholt still posted consistent numbers. With the Cardinals making him the 7th overall pick, they now have a star for the future within their ranks.
