On Thursday, October 3, Mumbai Masters and American Gambits locked horns in the first match of the Global Chess League (GCL) 2024 at the Friends House in London, England. Ganges Grandmasters and Alpine SG Pipers met in the second and PBG Alaskan Knights squared off with Triveni Continental Kings in the next.

The season 1 runner-up Mumba Masters lost to America Giants 6-11 in the season-opener in the first game. Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Bibisara Assaubayeva, and Jonas Buhl Bjerre won their respective games for the Giants. Harika Dronavalli was the only winner from the Masters while Hikaru Nakamura and Yu Yangyi tied with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Svidler Peter, respectively.

Alpine SG Pipers defeated Ganges Grandmasters 6-11 in the second game. Pipers’ Chess Giants Magnus Carlsen and R Praggnanandhaa tied their first games while Richard Rapport and Hou Yifan won 4-0 in their opening games.

PBG Alaskan Knights registered a dominating victory over the defending champions Triveni Continental Kings 15-3. Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, and Nihal Sarin were the shining stars for the Knights.
