Tech Mahindra, in association with FIDE, is all set to host the second edition of the Global Chess League, starting on Thursday, October 3, at the Friends House in Central London. The grand finale will take place on Saturday, October 12.

Alpine SG Pipers, American Gambits, Ganges Grandmasters, Mumba Masters, PBG Alaskan Knights, and Triveni Continental Kings are the six participating teams in the competition. American Gambits are the new franchise replacing Chingari Gulf Titans.

Triveni Continental Kings will enter the edition as the defending champions after defeating Mumba Masters in the final last year.

Global Chess League 2024: Format

All six teams will have six players and an icon player each, who will be locking horns on six boards which will be played simultaneously. Each board will be called a game and all six boards combined will be called one match.

In each match, all the players of one team will compete with the same color. The tournament will have a double round-robin format, with each team playing the other sides twice, once with each color.

Global Chess League 2024: Points System

A board/game won with black pieces will result in four game points to the winning player of the game. On the other hand, a winning player with white pieces will have three game points.

A team that scores more game points than their opposition will have three match points. If the two sides are level on game points, they will be awarded one match point each.

The competition follows 20 minutes of time control for the whole game without increment. The top two teams with the most match points at the end of the double round-robin stage qualify for the final, scheduled to be played in two matches. There will be blitz playoffs scheduled in case of a tie.
