Greg Doucette's take on Larry Wheels' ego lifting (@gregdoucetteifbbpro and @larrywheels on Instagram)

IFBB Pro Greg Doucette has a long history of competing and coaching clients in the realm of bodybuilding. Having a ton of experience both as a powerlifter and as a bodybuilder, Doucette knows the sport inside out.

Sharing his views and knowledge with his audience, Greg Doucette recently posted a video on the internet where he reacted to popular powerlifting sensations Larry Wheels and Anatoly.

While everyone who has been lifting for a while is already aware of the harms of ego lifting, it is still a very prevalent practice even amongst some elite-level athletes. Pointing out the same, Doucette’s recent video titled ‘I told you Larry Wheels was brain damaged’ saw him criticizing Larry Wheels over his heavy bicep curls set during his recent training session with Vladimir Anatoly.

Larry Wheels performed a mind-numbing set of bicep curls with 350 lbs dumbbells. Even though lifting his own body weight on a bicep curl is an astounding feat, the lift came with a lot of dangers as well according to Doucette. He stated:

“So, what Larry's asking for right now is a very good chance of getting injured. Remember, Larry has already torn partially his bicep when training for strongman. There's no reason to ego lift in the gym..this is ego lifting, it's very dangerous it's very risky, it's not worth it.” (12:39)

Greg Doucette gives insights into the dangers of ego-lifting

Greg Doucette further revealed why he thinks ego lifting on an exercise like bicep curl can be so risky for Larry Wheel. Pointing out his previous bicep injuries, Greg rightly stated that taking a risk so big once again is nothing short of foolishness:

“If you're using steroids..when you use steroids you're at greater risk of injury because the muscles get stronger than then tendons and ligaments and so when you curl that weight you might have the strength to lift it but the muscle doesn't have the strength to not get torn." (12:58)

Larry Wheels earlier tore his bicep back in 2019 as well as in 2023. Training for Strongman back at the time, Wheels suffered a horrific injury while training atlas stones. Posting about the same on his Instagram and YouTube, Wheels admitted that the injury, followed by the treatment was a very painful period in his life.

Greg Doucette’s advice for the 29-year-old powerlifter is out of genuine concern for Wheels. What are your views on the same? Let us know in the comments.
