Last season, Jontay Porter got himself banned from the NBA for getting caught up in an illegal gambling scandal. Following this series of events, the league has worked on a new rule with two of the most reputable sportsbooks.

ESPN's David Purdum reported Friday that FanDuel and DraftKings will no longer have prop lines for players on two-way or 10-day contracts. This is now being dubbed the "Jontay Porter rule" after his actions on the Toronto Raptors last year.

"FanDuel and DraftKings are among the sportsbooks that will not offer under bets on NBA players who are on two-way or 10-day contracts to combat attempts at manipulation.
The restriction is a result of discussions the NBA had with sportsbooks over the summer, after former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter was banned from the league for his role in a gambling scheme centered on prop bets on his statistics."

This ordeal began when sportsbooks noticed trends of bettors hitting big on Porter's prop lines in a handful of games. It was later revealed that he was exiting games early on purpose so the under on his prop lines would hit. Porter pleaded guilty to his actions over the summer and will be sentenced in December of this year.

Fully breaking down the Jontay Porter betting scandal

Jontay Porter, younger brother of Denver Nuggets forward Michael Porter Jr., played a total of 37 games in the NBA before getting banned for gambling. Purposely tampering with his stat lines was one of the numerous infractions that led to the swift punishment from the league.

The instance that tipped off this whole investigation was a matchup between the Toronto Raptors and Sacramento Kings. Porter ended up playing a handful of minutes before having to exit due to an illness. That night, a bettor placed $80,000 worth of wagers on his stats that cashed for over a million dollars. However, it was not paid out.

As the investigation went on, another occurrence like this was found in a previous matchup against the LA Clippers. There was a notable increase in betting activity on Porter that night, and he ended up leaving the game early due to an eye injury.

On top of tampering with his stat lines, it was also revealed that Porter was betting on NBA games while he was in the G-League. Placing the wagers from a friend's account, he allegedly bet over $54,000 on over 13 games.

After seeing this scandal unfold last year, the league seems to be taking the necessary measures to make sure another player isn't tempted to do the same.
