Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr recently shared his thoughts on the rapidly growing rate of 3-pointers being taken in NBA games. Ironically, it was coach Kerr and his Warriors dynasty that ushered in the 3-point era in the league back during the 2010s.
Coach Steve Kerr, known for running small ball lineups, admitted that he's not a fan of seeing a plethora of threes attempted in a single game. However, he acknowledged that consistently knocking down long-range shots could easily help a team establish a lead.
“Frankly, I don’t love seeing 100 threes taken in a game," Coach Kerr said (per ESPN's Dave McMenamin). "But you got to do what you got to do to win so I don’t think it will slow down anytime soon.”
Steve Kerr's Warriors started the 3-point era in the NBA
Steve Kerr took over as head coach of the Golden State Warriors in May 2014. Since then, he has embraced a high usage rate of the 3-point shot, capitalizing on the shooting prowess of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.
In Kerr's inaugural season, the league averaged 22.4 3-point attempts per game. By last season, that figure skyrocketed to 35.1 attempts per game across the league.
The Warriors leveraged their 3-point shooting to secure championships in 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2022.
Klay Thompson's departure marks the end of the Warriors Dynasty
With Klay Thompson's trade to the Dallas Mavericks, Steph Curry is now without his fellow "Splash Brother" in Golden State.
However, even before Thompson was traded, the era of the "Splash Brothers" appeared to be winding down last season. Klay averaged 38.7% from beyond the arc, which is close to his career-low average of 38.5%.
Now, with only Curry and Draymond Green remaining from the original Warriors Dynasty, Coach Kerr faces the challenge of running a new offense without Thompson in the mix.
The Warriors added Kyle Anderson, De'Anthony Melton, Buddy Hield and Lindy Waters III this offseason.
