Steve Kerr offers crucial update on Steph Curry's injury as Warriors superstar misses preseason game vs. Lakers

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is sitting out his team's preseason finale against the LA Lakers on Friday due to a finger injury, but coach Steve Kerr shared an encouraging update about the 36-year-old's status moving forward.

Curry sprained his right index finger during Thursday’s practice, according to Kerr. It's the same finger he hurt last week when it got caught in a jersey during a game against the Sacramento Kings.

However, Kerr said he expects Curry to be available for the Warriors' regular-season opener on Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

In the preseason finale, the Warriors started De’Anthony Melton, Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga and Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Meanwhile, the Lakers rested their regular starters, opting for a lineup of Bronny James, Cam Reddish, Jaxson Hayes, Jalen Hood-Schifino and Quincy Olivari.

Steph Curry appeared in four preseason games before the injury. He averaged 11.0 points on 36.6% shooting from the field, as well as 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 18.3 minutes per contest.

The Warriors won their first five preseason games, starting with a one-point victory over the LA Clippers, followed by two close wins against the Sacramento Kings and double-digit victories over the Detroit Pistons and LA Lakers.

Steph Curry wants another title

Despite several offseason changes, the Warriors will enter the 2024-25 season with championship aspirations, according to Steph Curry.

The team's performance has slipped in recent years, from winning the title in 2022 to falling in the Western Conference semifinals in 2023 and missing the playoffs entirely in 2024.

Earlier this summer, the Warriors traded fan-favorite sharpshooter Klay Thompson in the NBA's first-ever six-team deal, which brought in Kyle Anderson and Buddy Hield. They also added De’Anthony Melton and Lindy Waters III to their roster.

Speaking on "SportsCenter", Curry emphasized that the team remains fully committed to its championship aspirations.

“The season is fun. Competing with my guys, trying to chase another championship," Curry said. "You know that the ball is going to stop bouncing at some point. For me, I love this environment. I love being out there on the floor."

Curry also shared his excitement for the upcoming season:

“You miss it over the summer, and when you're back out here looking forward to that 82-game schedule, you know you're going to have just so much fun trying to figure out what this team needs to do to be successful, so I'm locked in on that," he added.

This offseason, Curry signed a $62.6 million extension, ensuring his place with the Warriors through the 2026-27 season.
