Anthony Edwards’ comments about past generations of NBA players having "no skill back then” are still reverberating. The Minnesota Timberwolves star said in a Wall Street Journal interview that only Michael Jordan had that in his resume. A handful of players from the 80s to the early 2000s have already pushed back on Edwards’ claim.

On “No Leash TV," Stephen A. Smith asked Magic Johnson to respond to Edwards’ viral comments. The LA Lakers legend answered that he doesn’t say anything back to someone who hasn’t won a championship. Johnson added that he wouldn’t go back and forth with a player who does not even have an NCAA title.

Steve Harvey backed up the legendary point guard’s response by sharing his thoughts on the Instagram post:

The comedian is a basketball fan who supports the Cleveland Cavaliers and is familiar with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan and other NBA superstars of the past. He even engages his fans in hoop talks in some of his shows

Anthony Edwards said in the interview that he didn’t watch games of past stars so he “can’t speak on it.” However, still shared his opinion.

Johnson, a five-time champ and a three-time NBA Finals MVP, is considered by many as the greatest point guard in league history. Steph Curry could stake his claim at that title but Johnson’s resume is something most players can only dream about.

In the 2023-24 campaign, Anthony Edwards led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals but lost in five games to the Dallas Mavericks. He will chase his first NBA Finals appearance in his fifth year in the league next season.

Meanwhile, Magic Johnson led the LA Lakers to the 1980 championship, winning the NBA Finals MVP as a 20-year-old rookie. It took more than just skill to accomplish what he did as he also showed leadership and understanding of the game almost unheard of from a first-year player.
