The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to give backup point guard Jose Alvarado a contract extension. The defensive-minded guard will stay with the team through the 2026-27 NBA season with his new deal. The organization signed Alvarado to a two-year, $9 million contract extension on Saturday, Shams Charania of The Athletic confirmed.

Alvarado has emerged as one of the fan favorites in the league. Since entering the NBA, the guard has gradually improved in all aspects of the game. Last season, he played 56 games, averaging 7.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. Alvarado also finished sixth in the Sixth Man of the Year voting.

Because of this, he now has a new deal to stay in New Orleans. Fans shared their thoughts about this deal on X (formerly Twitter).

"Bro gotta have the same agent as prime scottie pippen," a fan said about his new deal.
"He needs a new agent," another fan said.
"Underpaid like crazy," one fan tweeted, with the belief Alvarado didn't get the contract he deserved.

While others think Alvarado is getting underpaid with his new deal, others think his new contract is a steal.

"Steal of a contract," one fan said.
"Only 4.5 million a year for him is a massive steal ngl," another fan said.
"This is a great deal for the Pelicans," a fan posted on social media.

Throughout all this, one player from the franchise still hasn't received a new deal. Brandon Ingram is entering the 2024-25 campaign on the final year of his five-year, $158 million contract. The organization has not offered Ingram a contract extension, although he is due for one this offseason.

Last season, Ingram put up 20.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists. During the postseason, however, his numbers dropped to 14.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

The Pelicans added former NBA players to their staff and promoted a former WNBA star

Over the summer, the Pelicans have been busy in strengthening their coaching staff and front office.

They signed former NBA player Jodie Meeks as a new assistant coach. Additionally, they pursued Greg Monroe and assigned him as part of the team's developmental staff.

WNBA legend Swin Cash was also given a promotion by the organization. As Cash heads to her sixth season with the organization, she will now work as the team's Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations. This means she will focus on player scouting and development.
