Fans were stunned to find out the maximum contract extension Aaron Gordon has started to negotiate with the Denver Nuggets. According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, Gordon was eligible to sign a four-year, $150 million contract to stay with the Nuggets. Still, the organization has started negotiating with the role player to sign an extension with a cheaper deal.

Gordon is in the third year of his four-year, $86.6 million contract. This season, he's set to earn $22.8 million from the team. Next season, which will be the final year of his contract, the forward will likely exercise his player option if an extension hasn't been reached.

Surprisingly, Denver has been unwilling to offer Gordon the maximum contract he's eligible for.

"From what I understand, they are negotiating with Aaron Gordon," Windhorst said. "Aaron Gordon was eligible for a four-year, $150 million-ish contract extension. They haven't handed out that offer otherwise he would have signed it. From what I understand, they are negotiating, and they're hopeful of getting him at less than what would be his quote, unquote max."

Fans were caught off guard by the money Gordon seeks to make with Denver in his new deal.

"Role players wanting 38 mil a year now smh," one fan said.
"38 million a year for negative spacing cool dunks and taking the blame for Jokics interior defense😭," another fan said.
"150 mill for Aaron Gordon is crazy," a fan said.

Other fans targeted the Denver organization for being cheap.

"Denver being cheap. They're toast if Gordon bounces," one fan said.
"Denver being cheap….. I’m unsurprised," another fan said.
"If Gordon leaves, Nuggets will be in the play in," a fan said about the Nuggets.

The Nuggets want Aaron Gordon with the team for a long time

Since trading for Gordon in 2021, the Nuggets have become an elite team. They reached the top of the mountain with him as their starting power forward and won the title in 2023. His addition has been beneficial to the Denver organization.

Nuggets general manager Calvin Booth expressed the franchise's desire to see Gordon be part of the team for a long time. During the team's media day, Booth told reporters how optimistic he and the organization are in keeping him on the team.

"Hopefully, we have some productive talks with his representation and we're able to find a deal that we're both satisfied with," Booth said. "He's been an integral part of what we've done and we'd like to keep him here for a long time." (1:09:30)

The feeling has been mutual with Gordon, but talks about his next deal with the Nuggets could take a while.
