NBA Rumors: Mavericks considering re-signing ex-Luka Doncic's teammates for final roster spot

The Dallas Mavericks have one roster spot available for the 2024-25 NBA season and have started to consider a few of their former players. The Mavs made a winning move this offseason by acquiring former All-Star Klay Thompson. Now, they look to add experienced players to help the team make a return to the NBA Finals next season.

According to reports, the Mavs are considering signing three veteran guards and a veteran big man: Spencer Dinwiddie, Dennis Smith Jr., Talen Horton-Tucker and Markieff Morris. Three have played alongside Luka Doncic and know how they can help the team next season.

Dinwiddie has played for Dallas on a couple of occasions. During his time with the team, the 6-foot-6 guard helped the Mavs with his off-the-bench scoring. In the 2022 playoffs, the guard put up 14.2 points as an option for the team's second unit.

On the other hand, Smith started his career with the Mavs before Doncic took over the franchise. Since leaving the team, he's bounced around the league, adding a veteran presence to teams he's played for. In his two seasons in Dallas, he put up 14.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

Their third option, Morris, played in Dallas over the past two seasons. He hasn't had much playing time but provides a veteran voice in the locker room. Last year, he only played appeared in 26 games during the regular season and one in the playoffs.

Lastly, Horton-Tucker is the only player among the four options who has not played in Dallas. He improved his game during his three years with the LA Lakers and was a consistent 10-point scorer over the past two seasons with the Utah Jazz.

Dinwiddie is a frontrunner for the Mavericks' final spot

NBA insider Marc Stein reported that the Mavericks are high on bringing back Dinwiddie. Although they are still considering other veterans, the franchise is confident that the guard is who they need.

"Dallas could elect to keep the spot open in the short-term, but league sources say that the Mavericks do hold an interest in re-signing Spencer Dinwiddie. I’m likewise told that Dinwiddie has maintained property in the Dallas area since he was traded to Brooklyn in the Kyrie Irving deal in February 2023 and has interest in a return," Stein reported.

The Mavs aren't the only team interested in acquiring the guard. According to Mike Scotto of HoopsHype, the LA Lakers are intent on bringing him back this summer.
