The LA Clippers are set to face off against the Golden State Warriors in a highly anticipated NBA preseason game on Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. However, the Clippers will be without their superstar player Kawhi Leonard, who is still recovering from a right knee injury.

The two-time NBA Finals MVP has yet to participate in any five-on-five scrimmages during training camp, and no timeline has been set for his return. Leonard's ability to engage in full-contact five-on-five scrimmages in the coming weeks will be critical in his recovery process.

Kawhi Leonard hopeful to play in Clippers first regular season game

Injuries have marred Kawhi Leonard's illustrious career. The two-time NBA champion has never played at least 75 games in a single season, let alone a full 82-game schedule. Last season, Leonard missed the Clippers' final eight regular-season games and managed to appear in only two playoff games due to a knee injury.

The six-time All-Star was selected for Team USA's 12-member squad for the Paris Olympics. Leonard participated in a few practice sessions before withdrawing due to his knee injury.

Despite ongoing setbacks, Leonard remains optimistic about being in the LA Clippers' starting lineup for their 2024-25 NBA season opener against the Phoenix Suns on Oct. 23.

"Right now it’s a positive thing to think I will play, but we’re taking it day by day," Leonard said during the LA Clippers' media day.
"I never plan to miss games, but it’s just about my body. I’m a human being and we’re playing basketball," he added.

Leonard's main focus is on playing the long game, ensuring he remains available for his team during the most crucial part of the season. The two-time Defensive Player of the Year emphasized that his rehabilitation has progressed smoothly but highlighted the importance of exercising caution throughout the process.

"Everything has been going great for the past month, but being very cautious for reasons in the past. Haven’t been able to finish some playoff runs so making sure I stay healthy for those important moments," he added.

Kawhi Leonard in 2023-24 season

Kawhi Leonard had an outstanding season last year before a knee injury sidelined him. In 68 games, Leonard averaged 23.7 points per game, shooting an impressive 52.5% from the field, including 41.7% from three-point range. He also contributed 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. His stellar and consistent play earned the 33-year-old his sixth All-Star Game selection.

In the playoffs, Leonard appeared in just two games, averaging 12 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. The Clippers were eliminated in the first round, losing 4-2 to the Dallas Mavericks. Leonard's injury and four-game absence were key factors in the Clippers' defeat.
