NBA fans in frenzy over Warriors' intention to land Darvin Ham alongside Steve Kerr

Not many NBA teams will be planning as many changes to their rosters as the Golden State Warriors this summer. Golden State is in the market for new faces, and one of those could be Darvin Ham, with the former LA Lakers coach understood to be on the Dubs’ coaching staff radar.

“The Warriors had some conversation with former Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham in recent weeks," The Athletic's Anthony Slater, a Warriors beat writer, wrote on Thursday. "The Warriors’ desire to add a big-name assistant, and they are in search of either a former head coach or former player to fill the role.”

The former Lakers coach has a lot more free time on his hands after leaving the 17-time NBA title winners on May 3. The report sparked a massive response from many Warriors fans on social media.

“Ham revenge tour?” one teased.
“I would love it if the warriors did this lmfao. Kerr and Ham would be a disaster,” another quipped, followed by a laughing emoji.
“Darvin ham ain’t a bad coach he just had a terrible team the lakers were so inconsistent. Plus when we face the lakers who will know them better other than the man himself,” a user speculated in hope.
“As an assistant, won't matter. Assistants barely do anything,” another wrote.
“Never forget that Darvin coached LeBron and AD to end the Warriors Dynasty along with his three guard lineups,” someone mused.
“He would tell Kerr not call timeouts,” another joked.

Why the Warriors look to add coaching firepower to maintain dynasty

The Warriors coaching staff has undergone significant changes in recent years.

Mike Brown left in 2022 to become the Sacramento Kings' head coach, Jama Mahlalela joined the Toronto Raptors' staff in 2023 and the death of assistant coach Dejan Milojevic in January left a big void.

Now, the future of lead assistant coach Kenny Atkinson is uncertain as he attracts head coaching interest from multiple teams, with the Cavaliers, Lakers and Bucks reportedly expressing their desire to interview him for their vacant positions.

The next two months or so are going to have a lot of chatter not only around the NBA draft, potential free-agent acquisitions and roster shakeups but also potential big-name assistant coach candidates that the Warriors have to replace Atkinson. For now, he remains a Warriors coach, but the chances of a long-term future at the Chase Center are dwindling as the new season approaches.
