Mike D’Antoni has resigned as Lakers Head Coach

Lakers general manger Mtich Kupchak released a statement on Wednesday that Mike D’Antoni has resigned as the Head Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, with time left on his contract, after being appointed early in the 2012-13 season. As the Head Coach he had a record of 67-87 with the Lakers majorly due to the most disappointing recent season with a record of 27-55, one of the worst regular season records for the Lakers in their history.

Although his record is not one of the best, with the number of injuries the Lakers were battling, it is tough to name any other coach who could have succeeded.

D’Antoni asked the Lakers to pick up his option through the 2015-16 season wanting the insurance of having a fourth season with the franchise, but after the Lakers management refused, he resigned rejecting a $4 million pay packet for the year. Mitch Kupchak’s statement:

“Given the circumstances, I don’t know that anybody could have done a better job than Mike did the past two seasons. On behalf of the Lakers, we thank Mike for the work ethic, professionalism & positive attitude that he brought to the team every day. We wish him the best of luck.”

A legend and former Laker Magic Johnson, who has been very critical of D’Antoni’s job, seemed quite happy after the announcement as seen on his twitter account.

“Happy days are here again!” Mike D’Antoni resigns as the Lakers coach. I couldn’t be happier!”

The search for the new Head Coach of the Lakers is on and according to reports former Lakers Byron Scott and current assistant coach Kurt Rambis are the front-runners.

D’Antoni’s resignation is now a huge reason for the Lakers to ask Spaniard Pau Gasol to remain with the Lakers since he has struggled in D’Antoni’s fast-paced offensive system. Kobe Bryant, another player who had problems playing under the system and who has clashed often with the coach, would also be relieved.
