MLB insiders Jake Storiale and Trevor Plouffe talked about Matt Chapman's chances of winning an MVP award during the "Shohei Ohtani era." The San Francisco Giants third baseman currently boasts a 7.1 WAR (wins above replacement), second only to Ohtani in the NL.

Due to his strong performances this season, Chapman also signed a new deal with the Giants which will keep him at Oracle Park through the 2030 season. He will earn $151 Million over six years or about $25 million a season.

On Tuesday's edition of "Weekly Recap," Plouffe discussed why he thinks Chapman may never end up winning an MVP award despite his great potential.

"[34:22] Matt Chapman had a baby, came back and homers his first game back," Plouffe said. "[With a] 7.1 bWAR right now, It's all Matt Chapman right now."
"[35:06] I'm still waiting on his best offensive season, although, he [Matt Chapman]'s never going to win the MVP because Shohei Ohtani's going to win it every single time."

Both Shohei Ohtani and Matt Chapman hit home runs on Sunday

The two players proved their importance for their teams yet again on Sunday, as they hit home runs at crucial junctures of their games to power their squads to victory. Matt Chapman hit an inside-the-park homer in the Giants' 6-3 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field which gave his team the lead.

On the other hand, Ohtani hit his 53rd home run of the season in the rubber game of the series against the Colorado Rockies. With the Dodgers down a run heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, Shohei hit a solo home run to tie the contest before Mookie Betts won the game and the series in the next at-bat.

Ohtani also stole two more bases to go with the homer, taking his tally for the season up to 53-55.

Chapman and the Giants will take on the Diamondbacks again on Tuesday, aiming to win the series with a win. Meanwhile, Ohtani and the Dodgers open up an important series against the San Diego Padres at home, with both sides competing for the NL West division title.
