The Houston Astros suffered a big blow to their offense as No. 2 hitter Yordan Alvarez exited Sunday's 9-8 loss to the visiting Los Angeles Angels at Minute Maid Park. He suffered a right knee contusion while sliding into second base on a double in the third inning.

Alvarez left the game, and Mauricio Dubon came on in his place. The Astros took a 1-0 lead in the inning as Altuve, who walked in front of Alvarez's at-bat, scored via an Alex Bregman sacrifice fly.

Following the injury, Astros fans on X voiced their concerns about the injury suffered by arguably their best hitter at a crucial juncture of the season.

"RIP our season."
"He gets hurt everytime he hustles. Needs to just stay in jog mode."
"The season is over," a disheartened fan wrote.

Some fans were hopeful that the injury was nothing major and Alvarez could make a swift return.

"I like the hustle but the risk wasn’t worth it. Hopefully it’s nothing serious. Too close to October for this sh*t," a fan posted.
"Please be something minor!" another fan tweeted.

Yordan Alvarez injury and expected return

After completing sliding into second base, Alvarez got up and clutched his knee. Shortly after being removed from the game, the injury was diagnosed as a knee contusion by the Houston Astros in the seventh inning, according to MLB.com.

The expected timeline for a return from such an injury is anywhere from a few days in minor cases and up to four to six weeks for severe contusions.

Astros fans will be hoping that his absence, if any, is only a short one as Yordan Alvarez leads the team with a .308 batting average. The injury comes at an especially inopportune time, right before the Astros host the Seattle Mariners beginning Monday for a series that may have huge ramifications for the AL West title.

With a week left in the regular season, Houston (85-71) has a five-game lead in the division over Seattle (80-76). Both teams lost on Sunday, with the Mariners falling 6-5 at the Texas Rangers.
