The New York Yankees opened their final regular season series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. The Yanks clinched the AL East Division and are heading to the postseason after defeating the Baltimore Orioles. As for the Pirates, they can only hope to come back stronger next season with a better team after a disappointing season that sees them bottom of the NL Central.

The Yanks had Carlos Rodon take the mound in Game 1. Rodon made a fine start and held the Pirates scoreless for five innings. Pittsburgh sent Jared Jones to the mound against Rodon. Surprisingly, Jones prevented the Yankees from scoring in the first four innings.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. put the Yanks on the board first with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chisholm recorded his 40th stolen base, but Nick Gonzalez got the Pirates on the board with a solo home run in the sixth inning.

Rodon surrendered back-to-back home runs as Bryan Reynolds went deep to tie the game.

Nick Gonzalez and Bryan Reynolds hit home runs tonight

Nick Gonzalez and Bryan Reynolds were the bright spots for the Pirates as they went deep with home runs. Reynolds smashed his second home run in the eighth inning to give the Pirates a 4-2 lead.

The Bronx Bombers have already made the playoffs and are taking things slow. Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo were placed on the bench for rest. Without those bats, the Yanks struggled to score against the Pirates' bullpen.

Former Yankee Aroldis Chapman came in to close the game successfully for the Pirates. The Yanks have nothing to lose after making it to the postseason. Manager Aaron Boone would not want to risk his top players getting injured right before the postseason.

While Rodon gave a good effort, the offense struggled in Game 1. Luis Gil will start in Game 2 while hard-throwing Paul Skenes will get the nod for the Pirates. Pittsburgh failed to make it to the postseason but will try to secure a series win against the Yanks.
