Mariners to keep Jerry Dipoto
The Seattle Mariners fired their manager Scott Servais after a dismal season. Once holding a 10-game lead in the AL West, they now trail by 4.5 games and are hardly considered a contender.
This result, which comes after a failure to make the playoffs last year, reportedly won't cost president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto his job. This choice was, according to the Score, made before their shocking downfall in August.
Parker Meadows stuns Padres
The Detroit Tigers had been shut out for eight innings, and the San Diego Padres had a 3-0 lead. After a single and a walk, a first out was recorded. Another walk loaded the bases before Kerry Carpenter struck out. On a 3-2 count, Parker Meadows blasted what proved to be a game-winning grand slam, hampering the Padres' playoff aspirations.
Braves continue to slide in NL race
The Atlanta Braves were supposed to be one of the best teams in baseball. After a stunning loss to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday, they're barely holding on to a playoff spot. They're now 76-64 and are tied with the New York Mets for the final NL wild-card spot. The Mets are charging, as they've won seven in a row.
Yankees to get "creative" with closer
Following his 11th blown save of the year, Clay Holmes may not be getting all the save opportunities for the New York Yankees. After the 7-4 loss on Wednesday, which prevented a series win, the team might have to consider other options.
Holmes will still be in the mix, according to Aaron Boone, but others, possibly Tommy Kahnle, Mark Leiter or Luke Weaver, could see opportunities to close out games as well. The 11 blown saves are more than any other pitcher this season.
Astros waste gem from Hunter Brown
The Houston Astros were shut out 1-0 on Thursday by the Cincinnati Reds. It was a prime opportunity to keep the Seattle Mariners at arm's length, but the offense couldn't come through.
Hunter Brown delivered one of his best starts to try and keep them afloat, though. The pitcher recorded six innings of shutout ball with four hits and six strikeouts. Reliever Bryan Abreu entered in the seventh and served up a home run to Ty France.
