“I remember that being the loudest place I pitched in” – Ex- Yankees ace CC Sabathia, reflects on electrifying atmosphere of the Phillies fanbase

Over his storied MLB career, CC Sabathia became one of the most beloved pitchers of his generation. Thanks to his combination of elite skill and charming personality, Sabathia gained a massive following wherever he pitched. A 19-year pro, Sabathia made a name for himself as being one of the most fierce competitors on the mound.

Despite playing for three different teams in his career (Cleveland Guardians, New York Yankees and Milwaukee Brewers) the six-time All-Star recently dove into one of the craziest crowds he ever played in front of. In a recent episode of "The 6–1-1 Podcast," CC Sabathia spoke of the Philadelphia Phillies fans during the 2009 World Series.

“I remember that being the loudest place I pitched in," Sabathia told former Phillies stars Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins. "I pitched in the Metrodome, I pitched in Anaheim that year, but when we got to Philly it was crazy," the former New York Yankees superstar continued.

Philadelphia is a notoriously tough city to play in for opposing athletes and it was something that Sabathia had to learn quickly. In the episode, Sabathia shared that 2009 was his first season with the Yankees and was unaware of the close proximity between the two teams.

"Half the people in Jersey are Philly fans. I didn't know that," he continued.

Despite the hostile atmosphere in Philadelphia, the New York Yankees went on to win the World Series 4-2. CC Sabathia made two starts for the Yankees, posting a 0-1 record with a 3.29 ERA over 13.2 innings of work. This was the last time that the Bronx Bombers won the World Series

Phillies fans have maintained their passionate reputation well beyond CC Sabathia's playing days

Sabathia spoke on the podcast about the electric supporters during the 2009 World Series. The Phillies fanbase has maintained its reputation as one of the most raucous crowds in the MLB. After a few difficult years, the Phillies have become one of the top teams in the majors over the past few seasons, and the fans have been sure to support them along the way.

During the team's run to the World Series in 2022 and the NLCS in 2023, Philadelphia Phillies fans have come out in droves to support their club. Dubbed "Red October," Citizens Bank Park has been a difficult ballpark to play for any opponent, giving the team a true home-field advantage. Years after CC Sabathia's final season, Philadelphia remains a tough place to play for any visiting team.
