“I didn't face a big league hitter” - Blake Snell on missing Spring Training as slumping performance with Giants continues

Blake Snell has been struggling on the mound for the SF Giants in 2024

Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell has been subpar with his performances so far for the San Francisco Giants this season. Snell just narrowly avoided registering his fourth loss of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night.

Nothing has gone the ace southpaw's way since he made his blockbuster move to the Giants just weeks before the Opening Day of the 2024 MLB season. After his most recent outing against the Phillies at Oracle Park on Monday, he reflected on his form at the mound and shed light on why he might be going through the current slump in form.

Snell said:

"The one that I would say yeah, the big league Spring Training, you need it. It's tough to do it, thought I did everything I could to be ready and even after just two weeks noticing how much better I was throwing the ball just being here everyday."

Snell further added the importance of going to spring training to better prepare for a season and even drew similarities with Jordan Montgomery, who was another star southpaw to sign late into the offseason:

"There's nothing like.. you have to go to Spring Training so hopefully for me our whole team see that. I don't know what Montgomery is doing its tough for him, its not easy."

He further added:

"So, I didn't face a big league hitter until I pitched my first game in the big leagues this year. It's tough. You just don't have nothing to go off of . It's kind of like let's see who we have got, faced 18 year olds but yea so, its all excuses but its the truth."

Take a look at Blake Snell's reflection on his subpar start to the campaign here:

Blake Snell made only his fifth start of the campaign for the San Francisco Giants against the Phillies on Monday night at home. He gave up three runs on five hits, walked two, and struck out seven batters in four innings pitched.

Blake Snell has been unimpressive since signing with SF Giants this past offseason

Blake Snell is the reigning NL Cy Young award winner and followed his San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin to the San Francisco Giants this past offseason. San Francisco signed him to a two-year, $62 million contract, which includes an opt-out after the 2024 season.

Big money signing, big money move, but frail results so far this MLB season. He is 0-3, with a 10.42 ERA, 24 Ks and 2.0 WHIP. Giants fans will hope that their ace can turn the tide in his favor soon.

For his next start this season, Blake Snell will be up against the red-hot New York Yankees and Nestor Cortes after finishing their series against the Phillies at Oracle Park.
