Veteran New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton blew hot and cold for the Bronx Bombers during the regular season. However, the former NL MVP continued his stellar postseason record in ALCS Game 4 against the Cleveland Guardians on Friday.
The five-time All-Star smashed a three-run home run when the Guardians pitched instead of walking him with two runners on base in the sixth inning. The three-run blast extended his team's lead to 6-3 and propelled Stanton into an elite list of Yankees hitters.
It was Stanton's 15th home run for the pinstripes in the postseason, joining the iconic Babe Ruth and current teammate Aaron Judge in the list for most home runs for the Yankees in October. He is only behind Bernie Williams (22), Derek Jeter (20) and Micky Mantle (18) on the elite list of hitters.
Interestingly, Giancarlo Stanton reached the 15 home run mark in fewer games than Babe Ruth. The five-time All-Star took 35 games to get to the milestone while the MLB icon reached it in 41 games.
Stanton's milestone hit also made him only the second Yankees player behind the legendary Reggie Jackson, nicknamed 'Mr. October' for his remarkable postseason record, to have 4+ homeruns in the postseason multiple times.
Giancarlo Stanton is not getting ahead of himself with World Series in sight
Giancarlo Stanton's clutch performance helped the Yankees to a 8-6 win after a late scare from the Guardians. Although the Yankees hold a 3-1 lead in the series and are likely to seal the World Series berth in next game at Yankee Stadium, Stanton will talk about the Fall Classic when the team gets there.
When asked about being one win away from the World Series, Stanton said:
“Feels like nothing until we get it done. As far as I’m concerned, we haven’t done nothing. We’ll enjoy this for now, but we gotta get it done tomorrow. Onto the next.”
The championship series returns to New York for Game 6 and Game 7 (if required). The Yankees will hope to clinch the World Series berth before that by winning Game 5 at Progressive Field on Saturday.
