“Did they sell their souls again?”; “No farm system good lord” - MLB fans react as Padres trade top prospects for Tanner Scott to the Marlins

Just hours before the MLB Trade Deadline expired, the San Diego Padres were looking to improve. They needed to acquire some arms as their pitching staff has been lackluster this season.

In somewhat of a shocking move, San Diego acquired one of the best relief pitchers expected to be traded, Tanner Scott. He is somebody that should instantly boost their bullpen.

However, San Diego had to package four prospects to make the deal happen. Most notably, the 59th ranked prospect in all of baseball, starting pitcher Robby Snelling.

Also included in the deal were pitcher Adam Mazur, and infielders Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears. San Diego also received RHP Bryan Hoeing in this trade package that many fans cannot get behind.

"Did they sell their souls again?" - said a fan.

"No farm system good lord" - said another.

"AJ just gave the farm" - said another.

Padres fans are not too excited to see so many prospects leaving, especially with Scott being a rental player. He is expected to become a free agent following the end of this season.

"Farm system is cooked" - one fan said.

"Padres have no future" - said another.

"San Diego staying aggressive as always…shocker..." - said another.

San Diego has now traded 12 of its top 15 prospects in trades this season, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale. Unless they can get creative, the future does not look too inspiring.

Padres added another arm following the Tanner Scott trade

The Padres needed to add another starting pitcher during the trade deadline, and they did just that. After adding Tanner Scott to the bullpen, San Diego acquired Martin Perez from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

However, San Diego did not have to give up much to grab the lefty. They sent 18-year-old LHP Ronaldys Jimenez in return, who is currently at the rookie-ball level.

Perez was sidelined earlier in the year with a groin issue but has returned since. He has started 16 games, compiling a 2-5 record with a 5.20 ERA on 83 innings of work.

Perez could eat up a lot of innings for his new club. The team's ace, Yu Darvish, has been sidelined with right elbow inflammation, and there is no timetable for his return.

San Diego could not expect to try and fight for a playoff spot with the question marks surrounding their rotation. Now, they have picked up some insurance if Darvish cannot return.
