The 30 MLB teams are divided equally between the National League and American League. Among them, only five teams have yet to win the World Series. Last year's winners, the Texas Rangers, were also on the list but are now on the right side of the list.
Among those five, some teams are yet to win due to not being competitive enough or being relatively new to the league. Let's take a look at the teams who have yet to win baseball's ultimate prize:
#1. Tampa Bay Rays
Among all the MLB teams, the Tampa Bay Rays are the youngest, having debuted in the year 1998. Despite that, the Rays have put on multiple good runs and have even come close to the title by appearing in the 2020 World Series. However, they lost against the LA Dodgers in six games. Entering the 2024 season, they are coming off five straight postseason appearances.
But from what can be considered a small sample, the team has already put in some great display in terms of talent despite not having the payroll compared to other big market teams. There's a good chance the team will win one in the near future.
#2. Colorado Rockies
The next young team is the Colorado Rockies, who entered the league as an expansion team in 1993.
Their best season came in 2007 when they claimed a postseason spot by winning 14 of their last 15 regular-season games. Their surprising yet dominant run continued in the NLDS, with them sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 and following it up with a 4-0 NLCS victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks to earn a spot in the World Series.
But the Boston Red Sox spoiled their run with a win in the World Series. However, since that season, the Rockies haven't been great, only making three postseason appearances. Even now, they are not in a position to compete for at least the next few years with the stacked rosters of division rivals San Diego Padres and the Dodgers.
#3. Seattle Mariners
The Mariners made its MLB debut in the 1977 season and is also the only team to have not made the World Series. This comes as a surprise, with the Mariners hosting some big names like Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Edgar Martinez and Ichiro Suzuki over the years.
Their first postseason appearance was in 1995 when they won the AL West title and took down the Yankees in the divisional round before being ousted by the Cleveland Guardians in the ALCS. They made solid runs in 2000 and 2001 but were outdueled both times in the ALCS by the Yankees.
This was followed by a 21-year postseason drought, which ended in the 2022 season. After missing out by a game last year, they are in contention to make the postseason this fall.
#4. San Diego Padres
The Padres have had mixed runs in their bid to win the World Series since entering the league in 1969. Their first postseason appearance came in 1984 when they made the run-through to the World Series but were defeated by the Detroit Tigers in five games.
In 1998, they again made a spirited run to the World Series but were outlasted by the Yankees, who swept them 4-0. They lost NLDS in 1996, 2005–06, and 2020. They made the NLCS in 2022 but were defeated by the Philadelphia Phillies.
This year, they are in a tight race to contest for a spot in the postseason.
#5. Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers, like the Padres, entered the league in 1969. They made their first postseason appearance in 1981, a season that was cut short due to strikes. They were defeated by the Yankees in the ALDS.
They doubled this performance next season, this time going the distance and reaching the World Series. They fell just short of the title, with the St. Louis Cardinals becoming the winners in seven games. This was followed by a drought that lasted until the 2007 season.
They made four straight postseasons between 2018 and 2021 before missing out on the Commissoner's Trophy in 2022. Last season, they also qualified and are now again in contention to be there in October.
