Tony Khan recently made some cryptic comments about his critics, mentioning that he believes a "lot of people" don't want AEW to succeed.
When AEW first launched in 2019, it shook the wrestling world to its core and revitalized the industry. The promotion quickly gained a lot of loyal fans due to its long-term storytelling. However, over the years, AEW has garnered its fair share of critics.
To make matters worse, AEW's dwindling viewership has only sparked more criticism from its critics. Tony Khan and his company are constantly under pressure to improve the product but the criticism keeps flowing.
During a recent interview with Q101, Tony Khan addressed the criticism his promotion gets from a lot of people. He reiterated what an honor it was to bring wrestling to TBS and TNT every week and he doesn't take it for granted,.
“I think that’s a legitimate thing I said, and it is a challenging thing to be the challenger brand, but it’s also a great opportunity. Bringing wrestling back to TBS and TNT every week means a lot; it’s a great American tradition. I’ve really communicated that very well—that it means a lot to me and to the American people to have wrestling on TBS and TNT every week."
He continued to say that a "lot of people" don't want AEW to succeed and try to stop the company's growth.
“I think AEW is a great company, and there are a lot of people out there who don’t want to see it succeed and spend a lot of time trying to stop it. But that’s the fight that basically every challenger wrestling promotion has fought for decades, and it’s great standing here right now.” [H/T PWMania]
Tony Khan on Hologram's debut being cancelled
Hologram made his in-ring debut on the July 25th episode of Collision where he took on Gringo Loco. Since then, he has wrestled a couple of matches for the promotion. While his debut took place this year, he was originally slated to debut in 2020.
During the same interview, Tony Khan mentioned how Hologram was supposed to debut in 2020 but that was canceled due to the pandemic and he was locked down in Mexico.
"Literally, less than two weeks later, everything was shutting down, it was a crazy time in the world. We had brought him in, I was looking to make him Hologram then, and the world kind of went crazy, and he was locked down in Mexico for a long time. It was a long time before he made it back to America, and then I thought eventually, as things opened up, I really wanted to get Hologram in AEW.
