CM Punk returned to WWE in November of last year. However, from 2021 to mid-2023, he was signed to AEW. Interestingly, the Second City Saint was one of their biggest attractions. Punk's AEW run was a mixed bag. Initially, things were smooth between him and the Jacksonville-based company, but as months passed, their relationship soured. They had regular disagreements and Punk once got involved in a backstage altercation with the current TNT Champion, Jack Perry. The 45-year-old star was then terminated from his AEW contract.

Interestingly, the backstage altercation was captured on cameras and was aired on an episode of Dynamite earlier this year. This move has become a topic of discussion, with many people saying that Tony Khan had made the wrong decision to air that footage on TV. Recently, former WWE Superstar Matt Morgan expressed his opinion about the same while speaking on his Gigantic Pop podcast.

"F**k no! Hell to the no! No! That was a horrible move. I will argue, this is the worst move in AEW's short history. Dumb move," Matt Morgan said. [22:27 - 22:45]

What plans does WWE have for Punk remains to be seen.

WWE Superstar CM Punk believes that AEW is not a real business

After CM Punk left AEW and returned to WWE in 2023, he was interviewed by Ariel Helwani. During the interview, the Second City Saint stated that Tony Khan was not running a real business.

"Their (AEW) business, and I know a lot of people are going to be upset, is just not predicated… it’s not a real business. It’s not about selling tickets. It’s not about drawing money. It’s not about making money. It’s just not. I don’t know [what it’s about]. I think having good matches, maybe? And there’s nothing wrong with that," CM Punk said. [H/T Cageside Seats]

CM Punk is currently engaged in an intense feud with Drew McIntyre in WWE.
