Ricochet made his AEW debut last month at All In. The highflyer left WWE earlier this year and recently reflected on his time in the Stamford-based promotion.
Ricochet joined the WWE in 2018. He started in NXT and won the NXT North American Championship from Adam Cole the same year in August. After seeing his impressive in-ring skills he was moved to the main roster the following year.
However, after arriving on the main roster, he was underutilized. While he did win the United States and Intercontinental Championships, his career took a downturn after losing the IC Title to Gunther in 2022. The One and Only was underutilized for almost a year and as a result, he chose to leave the company and join AEW.
During a recent interview on Talk is Jericho, Ricochet recalled his time in the Stamford-based promotion stating that his role was to take other people's moves.
"Guys, I never won, for one. So if I won and left, it would be weird. Two, it’s like, he [Bron Breakker] just started on RAW, they’re trying to make him a big threat, they’re trying to make him do something that’s dastardly. That was Ricochet’s role to take the moves from the people, that was always Ricochet’s role. It doesn’t matter if it was Braun [Strowman] or Drew [McIntyre] or whoever, you know what I mean? Bronson Reed, Shinsuke [Nakamura], to take their move. I’m gonna take their move. It is what it is, it was a blessing and a curse, I blame myself." [H/T: Fightful]
Vince Russo bashes Ricochet for comments about WWE
Ricochet debuted at AEW All In during the Casino Gauntlet Match. Since his debut, he noted that fans got to see a lot of him in WWE but they never really saw what he was capable of. These comments didn't make a wrestling veteran happy.
Over the past few years, many fans and veterans of the industry have criticized Tony Khan for not using stars properly following their debut.
During a recent episode of Sportskeeda Wrestling's Writing with Russo, Vince Russo mentioned that Tony Khan's track record indicates his AEW isn't going to be any different.
"There's not gonna be quality at AEW either, come on Ricochet stop. You're going to work for Tony Khan. If you haven't seen this guy's track record for the last five years, I can be pretty sure there's not gonna be any quality." [From 00:57 to 01:15]
Since arriving in AEW, Ricochet has been racking up wins but he is still to make a major impact. The former WWE Intercontinental Champion is set to take on Will Ospreay on the fifth anniversary edition of Dynamite.
