History of the AEW World Championship

AEW was introduced as a promotion on January 1, 2019, and fans knew that the first title to be introduced in the promotion was to be the world title. Not complicating things much, the promotion simply named it the AEW World Championship, and was unveiled by the iconic wrestler Bret 'The Hitman' Hart at AEW Double or Nothing in May, which was also the first-ever PPV and the first-ever event by All Elite Wrestling.

At the event, Hangman Page won the Casino Battle Royal, and Chris Jericho defeated Kenny Omega to qualify for the tournament finals. A few weeks later, Jericho defeated Page at AEW All Out, becoming the first wrestler to hold the championship. Since then, the title has changed hands numerous times. It has been held by already established stars like Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Kenny Omega, and rising names like MJF and Swerve Strickland.

Jon Moxley was the first wrestler to win the title twice and then became the first to win it thrice. MJF held the title for 406 days, which is the longest in the title's history. He is also the youngest champion of the belt, at 26, while his former mentor Chris Jericho won the title at the age of 48, and is the oldest champion. The title has only been vacated once so far after CM Punk was suspended from the AEW after a post-conference.
