At the Athletic Club, Nate confronted Audra about the look he’d witnessed between her and Holden before Holden had left. Audra relayed that Holden had said he needed a friend in town, and he wanted it to be her. Audra claimed that she wasn’t thrilled about it and that she’d only agreed to have lunch with Holden to learn more about Nate’s brother.
Nate assured Audra that he trusted her, but he also knew it was sometimes hard to be completely open about an old flame. Audra prepared to share what she’d learned about Damian, but Nate proposed that they head back to his place first. She wondered if Amy would be there. Nate revealed that Amy wouldn’t be back from her appointment in Chicago for a while, and he asked if there was something Audra didn’t want Amy to hear.
Nate and Audra retreated to his apartment, and she spotted Amy’s scarf. Audra hoped Amy wasn’t too cold, and Nate found it sweet that she was worried. Nate relayed that Amy hadn’t expected Dr. Kelly to whisk her off for tests that soon, but there was no time to waste. Nate asked what Audra had learned about Damian.
Audra divulged that Damian and Holden had been best friends, but the dynamic between them had changed once Damian had hired Holden and assumed all the power. Audra sensed that Holden resented Damian for treating him like an employee first and a friend second. She added that Holden had admitted Damian had a temper, and it sounded like Holden had been on the receiving end more than once.
Nate questioned whether Holden had known Audra had been trying to get information about Damian. Nate cautioned that he didn’t want a spotlight on his brother, and he shared that Lily had been doing some digging, too. Nate revealed that Lily had learned Damian didn’t own Dangler or Monte Cristo. Nate fretted that too many people asking too many questions could blow up his efforts to reunite Amy and Damian.
Audra clucked that Nate was too emotionally involved to be objective, and he seemed ready to give his brother the benefit of the doubt. Nate admitted that he wasn’t completely ready to trust Damian, but he wanted to. Audra advised Nate to follow his instincts but be cautious. She preferred to find out everything they could about Damian before they let him further into their lives.
Nate cited the hope Damian had given Amy, who might never have considered undergoing treatment if she hadn’t seen a path to reconciliation with her son. Audra insisted that all she wanted was a happy, healthy ending for Amy and Damian, but she didn’t want Damian to hurt or disappoint Amy or Nate. Nate recognized that they might all get burned, but a big part of him wanted to believe they could trust Damian and become a real family.
Audra promised she’d be discreet while getting Holden to open up about his relationship with Damian. Nate was hesitant, and Audra wondered if he was jealous. Nate chuckled, but Audra teased that it wouldn’t be terrible if he was a little green-eyed because it was proof their relationship was important to him. Nate hoped he didn’t need to act jealous for her to know that, and they kissed.
Audra suggested they continue the discussion over pizza. She grabbed her phone to place the order and discovered a text message from Holden, who had written that he still needed a friend. Audra showed Nate the message and offered to follow his lead about how to respond. “You’ve got one,” Nate typed back.
An apologetic Nick dropped by Billy’s home unannounced. Nick shared that there had been no update on Sharon or Phyllis, and he wondered if Billy had a list of associates that Phyllis might have linked up with. Billy indicated that he’d already called everyone he knew, but no one had heard anything. Nick lamented that his worst suspicions were being confirmed that something was wrong.
Billy handed Nick a beer, but Nick balked because he had to meet with Chance. Billy suggested that he and Nick put their heads together to try to find something they’d missed. Nick considered the possibility the women had been kidnapped. Billy asked if Nick was sure Ian was dead. Nick confirmed that he’d walked by Ian’s dead body and even called the morgue to ensure Ian had been cremated.
Billy suspected Sharon and Phyllis were together, given that they’d each called one person from a burner phone to explain their absence at the same time, but he didn’t see them going off willingly together. Nick mentioned that Chance was looking into the kidnapping angle, but he groaned that the waiting was killing him. Billy sympathized that it couldn’t be easy after the nightmare Nick’s family had just been through. Nick confided that it was starting to take a toll on him.
Billy encouraged Nick to talk about it. Nick confided that it was hard not to think Phyllis and Sharon’s disappearance was somehow on him. Billy insisted it wasn’t true, but Nick admitted that there were times he didn’t think he’d make it through to the other side. Billy related as a single father, and he commended a Nick for being a rock for everyone. Billy urged Nick to give himself some slack. Billy hoped he could help Nick find the women, and Nick conceded that he’d like some help. The men found it ironic that they were joining forces, given their history.
Billy offered to listen if Nick needed to talk again, but they agreed they hadn’t shared a bonding moment. Nick received a call from ranch security and reported that nothing had been found on video footage. Nick headed out to check on his family. “Dammit, where are you?” Billy muttered to himself.
In the abandoned psychiatric facility, Phyllis exercised while Sharon sat at a desk, making notes. Phyllis guessed that Sharon was writing a bucket list, and she bet the list included expressing her love for her children. Phyllis admitted the same thing would be on her own list, and Sharon muttered that it made sense because Phyllis hadn’t gotten those moments with Daniel and Summer when she’d faked her own death. Phyllis chided Sharon for going there when they’d been having a nice moment.
Phyllis imagined that Sharon’s bucket list included something self-sacrificing, like giving away all her money to charity while she was alive, so everyone could say how incredible and generous she was. Sharon envisioned Phyllis choosing something selfish that guaranteed all eyes would be on her. Phyllis thought the last item on Sharon’s list was easy – to be saved by Nick. Sharon dared Phyllis to say she didn’t want Nick to burst through the door and save them.
Phyllis urged Sharon to exercise with her instead of wasting time. Sharon stressed that everything hinged on how well they solved the riddles. Phyllis groused that they’d solved two riddles and hadn’t gotten anything, and she speculated that the goal of the game was just to amuse their captor. Sharon bemoaned that her efforts to solve the latest riddle had led to nothing. Phyllis flippantly replied that she’d figured it out on her fifth jumping jack, but she refused to divulge the answer.
Phyllis reasoned that she and Sharon might be playing against one another, and she might get to go home if she gave the correct answer. Phyllis swore that she would send someone back for Sharon eventually. Sharon argued that it was also possible the game was about them working together, and she demanded that Phyllis stop playing the role of mean girl when their lives might be on the line. Phyllis responded that the answer was forgiveness.
Sharon marveled that forgiveness cost nothing but was worth everything. Phyllis bellowed that it was never going to happen after what Sharon had done to Phyllis’ family. Sharon pointed out that she’d have to forgive Phyllis, too, but Phyllis chalked her own transgressions up to ancient history. Sharon recounted that the music and first two riddles had referred to fights they’d had in the past, and she believed the person behind their abduction had an interest int them making amends. Phyllis proclaimed that she’d rather die and have rats gnaw at her decaying body than ever say and mean she forgave Sharon.
Sharon continued to search for clues about who was behind the kidnapping, noting that the mystery and performance elements indicated it was someone who wanted to prove how intimately they knew the women. Phyllis assumed the goal was to torture them, and she yelled at the loudspeaker that the plan was succeeding. Sharon lectured that at least she was trying to find a way to get out of there instead of doing jumping jacks and withholding information.
Phyllis encouraged Sharon to exercise to stay strong physically and mentally, since they’d be there for the rest of their lives if the goal was for them to forgive one another. Sharon pointed out that it might be their only way out of there. Phyllis imagined she could lie and say she forgave Sharon, but the “freak” would know she was lying. Phyllis suddenly doubled over in pain, complaining that she was nauseous.
Sharon helped Phyllis to the couch. Sharon called out that they needed help because Phyllis was sick, and Phyllis noted that it sounded like Sharon cared. Sharon chalked it up to simple human decency. The alarm sounded, and the distorted voice instructed, “Then you better start looking for the antidote.” Sharon protested that she didn’t know what she was looking for.
The captor ominously implied that Phyllis was dying because she’d been unwilling to progress through the stages of the game as agreed. Sharon frantically searched the room. Phyllis clutched her stomach and complained that the pain was getting worse. Sharon begged for a clue or riddle to give her a place to start, noting that the game would be over if Phyllis died. The alarm sounded again. “I am the beginning and the end, though you can’t see me,” the voice said.
Phyllis whimpered that she was sorry for what she’d said to Sharon, adding that her stomach felt like it was on fire. Sharon realized the answer to the riddle was the water, and she found one bottle in the pack with a sticker on it. Sharon pieced together that the water had made Phyllis sick at the beginning, and it would also end the pain. Sharon implored Phyllis to drink it.
