On The Young and the Restless, Cane came into our thoughts in December last year, but we only knew him as Aristotle Dumas. Did this storyline deliver as we thought it would?
The Young and the Restless: Cane/Dumas and the underwhelming plot

Ever since we first heard rumours of an enigmatic businessman, the rival of the great Victor Newman, we have longed for this person to come to Genoa City like a force of nature and put Victor (Eric Braeden) on the back foot time and time again. Did we realistically think someone would take him down? No, did we believe that Victor would cower in fear? Never. But we did expect…more.
Fans of The Young and the Restless came to the Soap Central Message Boards full of energy and with their thoughts on this storyline from then until now.

Senior Board Member demoslider started with –– All Cane has done since the reveal is hem and haw with his plans about taking over the Genoa City companies. Now, Phyllis stole the AI program, virtually knee-capping him. I think a more interesting story would have been Cane/Dumas taking over everything with the AI right before everyone went to France. When they arrive, they discover they have lost everything. Cane comes out, revealing he is Dumas, and tells them they all can work for him now or quit. Then the families join forces to find a way to get everything back.
Board User NEWURAQT –– I 100000000000000000% agree. It's really bad storytelling.
Valued Contributor CloverLeaf said –– I agree. The storyline was presented in one way, Cane as Dumas, a tycoon in the business world, and ended up nothing like that at all. Cane hasn't done one thing since his reveal, and no one respects him for anything. He allows everyone in town to talk to him like he's scum, and he acts like he's afraid of his own shadow, the total opposite of what we were led to believe the s/l would be. Cane should go back to France and take this asinine storyline with him.
Sara_in_BC replied with –– Yes, and we saw this with Victoria, and I can’t remember her husband’s name, who came in as a successful businessman who could take on Victor! Same playbook and flop! IMO Cane needs a big win and a hot romance to get his character back on track! Possibly he will be the hero in the new silly story with Matt Clark, but if that’s so, I don’t think even that will help this boring character! I actually think the story would have worked better with old Cane because he had some charisma and a sly twinkle in his eye! Also, he and Phyllis would have paired better because he had stature and looked more age-appropriate for a real romantic relationship!

We definitely expected more from this storyline; it went from the Count of Monte Cristo to, we can count on one thing: nothing is as it appears on The Young and the Restless. Give us someone who can REALLY go head-to-head with Victor, and for the love of goodness, can Cane (Billy Flynn) please stop giving Lilly (Christel Khalili) chances to hurt him? And please someone get Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) some help.
