Daniel Goddard on why Y&R is keeping him up at night

The Young and the Restless' Daniel Goddard dishes on Cane's downfall: "I couldn't believe what I was being asked to do."

Cane Ashby's life on The Young and the Restless has been smashed against a wall. It's also been stepped on, spit on, and pretty much obliterated from every angle. And that's putting it mildly. After all, the cosmetics exec made one simple mistake (drunkenly knocking up his colleague Juliet), and after an unsuccessful attempt to cover it up, he's jobless, homeless, and on the verge of forever losing his family. It's a lot raining down on the guy, especially considering that prior to this point, he's been a mostly stand-up dude.

"He's almost an anomaly in this genre. Cane is not a bed-hopper like Billy or Nick. He's a man of integrity who truly loves his wife and children. He sets the standard for family values. But he made a very stupid mistake and his world collapsed," portrayer Daniel Goddard tells TV Insider.

Dealing with Cane and Lily (Crystal Khalil) being on the outs is hard enough, but the truly heartbreaking part for Goddard was the moment Cane stole his kids' tuition money to pay off a blackmailer.

"I won't say I was disappointed, but I was shocked that Cane was taking money from his kids," he admits. "I even showed the scenes to my wife and I don't normally do that. I try to keep work and family separate. I don't like my family to watch me act, and I don't like to watch me, either. I get too self-conscious. But this time I had to [share]. I couldn't believe what I was being asked to do!"

That being said, Goddard dug deep to find the justification -- just as he does with any story that is thrown his way.

"I'm always trying to find Cane's motivation, even if it's not obvious in the scripts," he says. "It wears me down and it keeps me up at night, but I gotta lay it all out in my mind. That way, amongst the catacombs of storyline, I don't turn into a skeleton."
